Part Number: AAQ-597
This antique French pistol stocked in dense European walnut, this .64 caliber smoothbore pistol has a checkered grip with comfortable swell and domed buttcap. The iron furniture is neatly shaped and hand engraved. The barrel is fitted with a hooked breech and secured with a single wedge key.
The .64 caliber smoothbore has some scattered pitting. The 5" barrel is swamped octagon with decorative gold wash at the breech. The rear quarter flat has some heavy pitting as if it was stored against a wet object for an extended period of time. The side of the barrel is stamped with a 22 and a French St. Etienne proof mark. The front sight is missing, while the rear sight is integral to the hooked breech.
The stock has raised carving around the hooked breech and the grip is neatly checkered. The stock has scattered handling marks. All of the furniture has some degree of hand engraved designs. The ramrod is missing.
The antique flintlock incorporates very late flintlock features including a roller on the frizzen and rain gutters on the sides of the pan. The top jaw and top jaw screw are modern replacements and look out of place on the well refined lock. The lock holds half cock and full cock securely and is crisp. We did not test the lock due to the poor fit on the top jaw. The lock is engraved with birds and flowers and is signed S. Sommet, St. Etienne.
