This left hand Thompson Center RENEGADE .54 percussion rifle appears to be as-new unfired. This early rifle is factory finished with a black walnut stock, color case hardened percussion lock, double set triggers, and blued steel furniture. This rifle is fitted with the early square partridge sights which many shooters prefer to the bead sights fitted to later production rifles.
The .54 caliber barrel is 1" octagon, 26" long. The .54 caliber bore is rifled with a 1 in 48" twist to provide good accuracy with a patched round ball, or a Thompson Center .54 caliber Maxi-ball. The bore is bright and clean in as-new condition. The hooked breech can be dismounted by removing the ramrod, putting the lock at half cock, and removing the wedge key. This allows for easy cleaning with the barrel dismounted from the stock. This rifle is fitted with the factory 3/8" diameter wood ramrod with blued steel 10-32 threaded tips to accept loading, and cleaning accessories.
Trigger reach is 13-3/4" and this rifle weighs 8.2 pounds.
Our lock view shows the color case hardened percussion lock, factory engraved by Thompson Center. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. Notice the bright rainbow of mottled colors. The stainless nipple for No. 11 percussion cap, has standard 1/4-28 threads.
Correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early. When training youngsters, we prefer to start with the set trigger disabled.
