Part Number: AAQ-689
This nice 1858 Remington New Model Army revolver is produced by Pietta of Italy and offered as used. The cylinder has very faint markings in the blue finish from cocking. The walnut grips have very minor handling marks. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. This .44 caliber steel frame revolver will give years of reliable service. A spare cylinder and modified Ruger plastic case are also included.
The factory recommends our #BALL-451 pure lead .451" round ball, but we strongly prefer the slightly larger #BALL-454 Hornady .454" round ball, which provides better compression, noticeably more power, and best accuracy. However, an oversize ball tends to shear lead at each chamber mouth, changing the size and bullet weight, a problem. This revolver has slightly chamfered chamber mouths. If your revolver shaves lead, slightly polish each chamber mouth with fine emery and a marble, until the ball seats fully, compressing the lead instead of shearing it.
The side flats of the barrel bear the maker's name, and Black Powder Only .44 Cal.. The 8" octagon barrel is fitted with a post blade front sight. The back of the front sight is painted florescent green to provide better visibility. The notch in the center of the frame serves as the rear sight. The walnut grips are factory finished with a deep red satin varnish, mounted with a blued steel screw, through brass escutcheons.
The traditional brass triggerguard is polished bright and has just started to mellow from use. The Remington trigger is wide and comfortable. The rigid steel frame of the 1858 Remington made it highly prized by its users. More officers carried Colt revolvers during our Civil War. When the war ended, more Remington's were purchased by discharged officers.
This revolver includes an extra percussion cylinder. The original blued steel Italian nipples are too small to properly fit American No. 11 percussion caps. We recommend replacing the nipples with our #PIR-LS best 6-. 75mm thread stainless steel, which are designed to accept CCI or Remington standard No. 11 caps.
The blued cylinder has the Remington safety notches cut between each nipple recess. Pull the hammer to half-cock, turn the cylinder to align the safety notch with the hammer nose, and set the hammer into the notch to safely carry the revolver when loaded.
This percussion revolver appears to be near new with only a few minor marks in the finish. It includes one extra percussion cylinder and a plastic case. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
