Part Number: AAQ-752
This used Thompson Center RENEGADE .50 caliber percussion rifle was factory finished. The rifle is offered in used condition with a few handling marks on the stock and metal. This is a early production Renegade rifle, fitted with the partridge style front sight and square notch rear sight.
The .50 caliber, 1" octagon barrel is 26" in length. The bore is bright, and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a partridge style front sight and square notched adjustable rear sight for windage and elevation. The back of the front sight has some orange paint on it. The barrel has been factory blued, but does show wear in the finish. There are a few nicks and scratches from field use. We note that there are a number of marks on the top barrel flat just ahead of the breech. The crisp corner of the flat has been rounded over and the finish worn off.
Trigger reach is 14" and the weight is 8.5 pounds, making the rifle set up for today's average to taller size shooter.
The bore is bright and clean. We recommend our #BALL-490 Hornady pure lead .490" round ball, #OX-15-50-D Ox Yoke .015" dry patch, #MINK OIL tallow lubricant, and 70 grains of #GOEX-FFg black powder for best accuracy. If hunting big game, in thick brush, try our 50 caliber Maxi-ball. Increase the powder charge as needed, to achieve best accuracy with this heavier bullet. Recoil will increase, but will not be noticed during the hunt.
Our front view shows the straight grain American black walnut stock. The stock has a few dings and marks from field use. The blued steel buttplate is wide and nearly flat to spread the recoil from the .50 caliber bore over a large area. The buttplate shows wear in the finish from loading. The wide trigger bow has ample room for the double lever, double set triggers. A sling stud is mounted in the toe just behind the trigger guard. A stud is also mounted in the front ramrod pipe for attaching a sling. No sling is included. The wooden ramrod is fitted with blued steel tips threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
Our top view shows the hooked breech that allows the barrel to be dismounted for cleaning. To dismount the barrel, place the lock at half cock, withdraw the ramrod, remove the single wedge key located forward and below the barrel. Use a small brass drift, such as our #TOOL-KEY-B. Once the key is removed, lift the barrel from the muzzle to unhook the breech from the tang.
Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.
Our lock view shows the color case hardened percussion lock, factory engraved by Thompson Center. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. Notice the bright rainbow of mottled colors.
Correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early. When training youngsters, we prefer to start with the set trigger disabled.
No cheek piece is carved on the T/C Renegade. Not to be confused with the T/C Renegade Hunter, this is the deluxe version with double set triggers.
