Part Number: AAN-766
This antique double barrel flintlock shotgun has late 18th to very early 19th century styling. This smoothbore is stocked in European walnut with a checkered wrist. The iron furniture is neatly hand engraved. The flintlocks appear to be of excellent quality with a roller on the frizzen and a sliding safety. When the lock is at half cock the sliding safety can be pushed forward to secure the cock in position. The safety has to be manually withdrawn to cock the lock. The lock plate is signed BATE. The barrel is also stamped with a small tombstone markers mark initialed EB. We attribute this to the English gunmaker Edward Bate.
The 14 gauge Damascus barrels are 36-3/4" from the muzzle to the rear of the breech plug. The twist pattern is visible over the length of the barrels. The breech end of each barrel has a gold oval inlay marked Bate and London individually. The breech end of each barrel is stamped with three marks. A crown over CP London proof house proof mark, a tombstone star over EB makers' mark, and a crown over V, London proof house view mark. The right hand barrel measures .690" diameter at the muzzle, the left barrel measures .685" at the muzzle. The bores have a frosted appearance with some scattered light pitting.
