Part Number: AAQ-576
Evolved along the lines of the nearby Lehigh Valley longrifles, this fine Bucks County rifle displays features that are fairly unique, though not limited to, that region. The side opening patchbox, buttplate, triggerguard, and sideplate design all have a A. Verner, Bucks County, Pennsylvania influence. The rifle is stocked in a lovely piece of curly maple, which has been neatly raised carved, and is trimmed in brass furniture with hand engraved nickel silver patchbox and toeplate. The swamped octagon barrel and L&R Classic flintlock are finished bright. This rifle is as-new, test fired, unsigned attributed to contemporary builder J. Purser.
The .50 caliber 42" swamped octagon barrel gives this rifle a modest weight without being overly muzzle heavy. The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist, flares at the muzzle to align the sights. The bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. The bore is bright is as-new condition. Recoil should be modest with a .490 pure lead round ball, in a .018" ticking patch, lubed with Mink Oil (use real animal fat, not a petroleum or vegetable grease), cut your patch at the muzzle after seating with a short starter, over 75 grains of GOEX FFg black powder. Prime with two or three grains of GOEX FFFFg priming powder, never more than about one-third pan full.
Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.1 pounds.
The curly maple stock is stained to a warm brown with a golden undertone to best display the figure in the curly maple stock. The buttstock is fitted with a tall A. Verner style buttplate, flat and comfortable, ideal for this .50 caliber rifle.
The side opening patchbox is common to the Bucks County school, but not limited to it. The patchbox door has a jeweled button release in the toeplate. Once the latch has been released the door springs open under the pressure of the door spring. Beneath the door is a deep cut cavity for storing flints patches or other related accessories. A hand engraved nickel silver toeplate is fitted to protect the toe of the rifle. The polished brass triggerguard has engraved moldings on the finials and bow.
The forend of the rifle has a incised molding from the ramrod entry pipe to the muzzle cap. The chevron style sheet brass muzzle cap is polished bright. Three ramrod pipes secure the ramrod to this rifle. The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a copper tip with 10-32 threads for loading and cleaning accessories.
Fitted with an L&R Classic lock, the frizzen has an anti-friction roller. The roller frizzen rides over the cam action spring, giving the lock very snappy performance. The stainless steel vent liner is in the perfect sunset position, centered on the pan, and high enough to catch the full heat of the center of the priming flash. Well tuned to spark well, the frizzen closes very smoothly, and the pan to frizzen fit are near perfect, to retain the priming powder and keep it dry, while hunting in damp weather.
The raised and incised carving on the wrist flows into the front edge of the cheek. The cheek is inlaid with a flowering hunters star that is hand engraved. The engraving has not been shaded, but can easily be darkened by rubbing the star with used cleaning patches. Raised and incised C scrolls accented with a small amount of silver wire inlay decorate the stock behind the cheek piece.
